The use of colored marble is the first thing that strikes the viewer at the sight of these two mythological groups representing Neptune and Amphitrite pushed by the wind, resting on a sea monster and accompanied by a nereid and a triton blowing in a conch. The choice of the iconographic repertoire of these two allegories was not chosen at random but rather to express a political message: that of maritime power. Monumental in their conception, the two sculptures were intended to be viewed from the front as well as to serve as ornaments inside a Venetian palace, given their dimensions and the fixing holes visible at the back. Although the use of this unusual hard and fragile marble, requiring a great deal of effort and mastery of the chisel, laboriously polished by abrasion, does not allow us to attribute these two works with precision, they nevertheless belong to the Venetian school of the second half of the 17th century by their ambitious style of a baroque tinged with classicism.
