Abstract of the Lower Astronomy of the Seven Metals. Paris, Jacques de Senlecque, Jean Remy, Jean Hénault, 1645. Small in-4, ivory half vellum, smooth spine (Early 20th century binding). Very rare first edition of this treatise on occult astronomy. Its publisher, Jean Ballesdens, dedicated it to Chancellor Séguier. The work, which claims to explain exactly the Harmony of the Systems of the Seven Planets, the set of the twelve Signs of the Zodiac and other Sky Constellations of the Hermetic Philosophers, is followed in the second part of the volume by an Essay on Natural Astronomy directed against the opinions of Ptolemy, Copernicus and Tycho Brahe. A woodcut diagram of the planetary system is printed on p. 45. A Protestant physician and alchemist, Jean Brouault died in prison, where he had been thrown following a major controversy over the Sacrament of the Last Supper, which he supported in 1603 against Cordelier François Feu-Ardent. We also have from him a Treatise on brandy published by Ballesdens in 1646. A copy is dated 1645; others are dated 1644. From the Max Cointreau library, with ex-libris. Inside a little scorched. Caillet, n°1697 - Houzeau & Lancaster, n°5164 - Duveen, 102.
