Burlesque poems containing several episters to various persons of the Court, and other works of this kind of escrire. Paris, Antoine de Sommaville, 1647. In-4, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, back decorated with small irons, fillets on the cups, inside lace, gilt slices on marbling (Hardy). Rare first edition.
These epistles in verse are addressed to great figures in the entourage of Marshal de Schomberg: to Miss Descars, dedicatee of the edition, Mrs. d'Hautefort, Mrs. de Villarsceaux, Miss de La Garanne, the Count of Montignac, the Baron de Saint-Georges, among others.
Jean Loret (c. 1600-1665) remains best known for his Gazette rimée or Historical Muse, a weekly chronicle that he wrote from 1660 to 1665 for Marie d'Orléans-Longueville, future Duchess of Nemours, on politics, theatre, literature, gossip and court entertainment.
Mayolas and Robinet will be the continuators of this burlesque genre.
