300 figures by Marillier - The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testament, translated into French on the Vulgate by the Maistre de Saci. New edition, decorated with 300 figures, engraved after the drawings of Mr. Marillier. Paris, Defer de Maisonneuve, de l'imprimerie de Monsieur [- de l'imprimerie de Didot jeune,- Bastien, Ponce,- Gay, Ponce, Belin,- Gay, Ponce, Gide], 1789 [- an XII [1803-1804]], 12 vol. in-8°, half-marroquin long-grain plum with wedges, marbled paper plates surrounded by a triple golden filet, spines with decorated ribs, marbled edges (faded spines, rubbed leg. plates, qqs. scratches, blunt corners; text n.c, several snakes browned, russet pet., qqs bites, tears in text on p. 309 of 3rd vol. no missing, leg. pages browned in some vol.) Exceptional edition when one imagines the difficulties encountered in editing a Bible, even a luxury one, during the revolutionary period. Based on the translation of Le Maistre de Sacy, this edition, begun in 1789 at the Imprimerie de Monsieur, was continued with Didot's characters by Defer de Maisonneuve (vol. 4), then by Bastien and Ponce (vol. 5, published without date, by omission or caution), by Gay, Ponce and Belin (vol. 6 to 8, dated years VIII and X) with the complicity of Gide (vol. 9, n.d.) and ended more serenely shared between these same publishers. Complete with the folding map of the Holy Land and the 300 figures after Clément-Pierre Marillier and Nicolas Monsiau engraved by Dambrun, de Launay, Delignon, Dupréel, etc. Cohen, 935; Reynaud, 489-490.
