Son of Jean-Baptiste Calvet and Marie Masse, Joseph Calvet was an important figure in the city of Avignon. He was a lawyer, councillor at the town hall in 1711, assessor in 1716 and 1722, councillor of the first hand and rector at the great hospital in 1728. In 1712 he became the owner of the noble lands of Lapalun and added this name to his patronymic, to distinguish him from the other Calvets.
