This painting will be included in the catalogue raisonné of Jean-Louis Forain's work currently being prepared by Florence Valdès-Forain.
Jean-Louis Forain was very famous during his lifetime and took part in four out of the eight Impressionist exhibitions between 1879 and 1886. Close to Edgar Degas (1834-1917) whom he met at the Café la Nouvelle Athènes, the two artists were linked not only by many affinities, but also by common pictorial motifs (dancers, the world of theatre, horse racing, nudes, etc.). Most often, Forain's watercolors, gouaches and pastels are marked by a rapid style, bright colors, and a caustic satirical spirit.
