Masterly sculpture of classicism
1750/70
Mother with child/Madonna
Carved from boxwood
H 14,5cm
This extraordinary small sculpture from the Flemish area is of wonderful quality.
Stylistically, this sculpture shows the classicism that was established as the predominant art movement throughout Europe at this time. It is worked fully round. The folds and draperies are sweepingly carved down to the smallest detail. The mother sits upright on a stool or chair without backrest. She holds the child on her right thigh. The little man's lively movement gives the impression that he is about to slip off her thigh. But Mary holds him tightly and gives him security. The sculptor has interpreted the intimate connection between the mother and her child very expressively and created a small masterpiece in the overall composition. Especially such small sculptures are highly sought-after collector's items. The used material boxwood is a popular material for Kunstkammerobjekten. Although very difficult to work with, it is of the highest artistic value, especially when it has been so masterfully finished.
