CEILING LIGHT "AUX BUSTES DE FEMMES ET DE BACCHUS" Louis XIV, Paris circa 1700/10. Studio of André Charles Boulle (1642 - 1732). Bronze chased and punched as well as fire-gilded. On a baluster shaft six curved light arms, mounted on busts of women or Bacchus. The bowl-shaped drip plates godroned and with leaf decoration, vase-shaped spouts. The upper nodus decorated with espagnolettes and applied with leaf decoration. Decorations in the form of friezes, leaves and palmettes in relief. D 67, H 60 cm. Pierced holes of a former electrification, screws partly replaced. Various candlesticks by André Charles Boulle in this style are known and in important collections such as the Louvre, the Bibliothèque Mazarin or the Munich Residenz. Striking decorative elements such as the busts of Bacchus and women, the curved canted light arms with acanthus leaf decoration, and the applied leaves are peculiar to these (cf. Hans Ottomeyer/Peter Pröschel. Gilded Bronzes. Munich 1986. vol. 1, pp. 51 - 55. likewise: Jean Nérée Ronfort. André Charles Boulle 1642 - 1732. A new style for Europe. Paris 2009. p. 33/34). The fine and good workmanship as well as the quality of the gilding also speak for an origin of the chandelier from Boulle's workshop.
