TAPISSERIE D'ENTRES DEUX "ALLEGORIE DES REICHUMS"
Brussels, c. 1650. With the city mark B B (Brabant - Bruxelles). From a series on human life.
Narrow portrait tapestry depicting a ruling couple being showered with wealth from heaven. Below, a boy picking up coins. The upper section with a cartouche depicting a landscape, bordered by a garland of fruit and flowers. The lower finish with a cartouche.
442 × 164 cm.
Repairs and restorations, probably somewhat shortened in height.
A decree of the city of Brussels of 1528 obliged the producers of tapestries to mark their products with the city marks as well as a mark of the maker or orderer (these are missing on our tapestry). The decree became an imperial edict in 1544, obliging the other centres to adopt a town mark as well. Cf. Guy Delmarcel, La Tapisserie Flamande, Paris 1999. p. 362.
Comparable examples from this series in Madrid and Vienna.
