Post Lot Text
In Zurich, Cologne, Paris, London, Tokyo, San Francisco, New York, I could proclaim that I am the author of Dada in New York. In 1912 before Dada. In 1919 with the authorization and approval of other Dadaists, I legalized Dada in New York. Just this once. That was enough. That was as good a time as any. It was a Dada. The only issue of New York Dada was not named after its authors. Extraordinary for Dada! Of course, there were a number of contributors. Both willing and unwilling. Both confident and suspicious. What did it matter? Just a number. Forgotten. Not even seen by most Dadaists or anti-Dadaists. Now we're trying to relive Dada.
Man Ray, 1944, quoted in
Man Ray, Objets de mon affection, Paris, 1983, p. 20.
