Ceramic salt shaker with decoration of grotesques. Urbino. Italy. Possibly by Orazio Fontana or Antonio Patanazzi. Circa 1560.
There is documentation of a dinner service being produced under commission by Count Guidobaldo Della Rovere which was made to be sent to Philip II, King of Spain (letter from Paolo Mario written in Urbino and dated 17th September 1562). The provenance of this salt cellar suggests the hypothesis that it could have been part of the dinner service known as the “Spanish Service.”
10 x 18 x 12 cm.
Provenance: Aristocratic collection, Spain.
