Multi-cylinder, multi-valve, the race for sophistication was in full swing at the beginning of the eighties, and many manufacturers tried their hand at a new technology: turbocharging.
Expensive and rather poorly mastered, the fashion will be a flash in the pan, but the fact remains that these beautiful turbochargers were a superb technological showcase.
Introduced in 1980, the Honda was the most daring bet. The world No. 1 at the time had indeed chosen to equip a relatively small-displacement motorcycle with a turbocharger. The CX 500 was equipped with a V-twin, which further complicated the problem.
The problem was masterfully solved at the cost of great technical complexity, and while the first CX 500 Turbo proved a bit tricky to ride due to poorly controlled power delivery, the subsequent CX 650 turned out to be one of the best sport touring bikes ever made.
Too late! Turbo was out of fashion and performance-minded riders preferred to go for bigger displacement.
The signature of a great European designer
Honda did its utmost to ensure the success of this prestigious machine by, among other things, calling on the famous car designer Michelotti for the styling, to whom we owe the CX Turbo's innovative and functional forms: a fairing offering a rare level of protection that is an integral part of the bike and blends into a very large and short tank.
