The adventures of Telemachus, son of Ulysses, were written by Fénélon to be used for the teaching of the Duke of Burgundy, grandson of Louis XIV. The aim was to teach the future sovereign the art of reigning by giving him, through the story of the adventures of the son of Ulysses, the moral and political training that would suit a future king.
The work, which contained a veiled criticism of absolutism, cost Fénélon's place at court when it was published in 1699.
