"Picasso was fascinated by the sculptural potential of the two-dimensional. Throughout his life, he cut and tore up two-dimensional images, as if to model them or to make them sculpter : as a child, he started by cutting paper to amuse his brothers and sisters. Cutting and déchirer : this is what he used to draw on pieces of newspaper when he arrived in Paris. Even though these torn pieces of paper seem to have been handled without preconceived thought, their shape gives the drawing greater strength."
