Barrias was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1844 for a Cincinnatus receiving ambassadors to the Senate. He was a pensioner at the Villa Medici and stayed in Rome from 1845 to 1849. As with most boarders, the stay was extended by excursions to Naples and Capri. Barrias was also one of the decorators of the foyer of the Paris Opera House.
