Victor Leydet (1845-1908) was the artist's father. He was a Member of Parliament, Senator and Vice-President of the Senate. The garden in which the artist's father is depicted here is also depicted in several of Louis Leydet's works; it is the family property in Aix en Provence where the family received politicians, artists and friends of the time. It is therefore a simple image of a man in hiding, far from public constraints, that this painting allows us to contemplate.
Bibliography: This work is mentioned in the work Les petits maîtres d'Aix à la Belle-Epoque 1870-1914, Franck Baille, Ed. de l'imprimerie Paul Roubaud, 1981 (p.60).
A poster from the exhibition devoted to the artist at the Friends of the Arts gallery in 1958 is attached.
