NORWEGIAN WORK CIRCA 1900 - DRAGESTIL MOVEMENT - PANELS CARVED AFTER GERHARD MUNTHE (1849-1929) Title vignette of the Saga of Harald Hårfagre (Harald 1st of Norway) Corner forming a serving tray in stained Norway spruce. The paneled lower part opens with two small doors, each receiving a sculpted and polychromed bas-relief based on the title vignette of the Saga by Harald Hårfagre, an illustration by Gerhard Munthe taken from the 1899 prestige edition of The Saga of the Norwegian Kings (Heimskringla) by the medieval author Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241), largely illustrated by the artist. The upper part has an in-between niche and is opened by a curved glass door at the top. The pediment, the glass frame and the in-between are decorated with sculpted Dragestil motifs. In the state of use, a small part is missing on the lower part at the back, the plinth is missing on one side of the base.
