Miniature compasses, circa 1780
Very rare folded fan with scientific curiosity. Cream silk leaf painted with a gallant scene in a country setting in the centre. Fruit still lifes, brioche and biscuits on the sides, and flowering branches underlined with golden chain stitch.
Reverse side painted with a bouquet of roses and forget-me-nots.
Cut-out ivory* frame with alternating zigzag profile debrins. The two plumes engraved with a still life in glass, and pierced to accommodate miniature mother-of-pearl framed compasses, under glass, gold rimmed (D. 2.2 cm).
