Rare and important HÉRIZ in Silk (Persia), circa 1860
Wak Wk prayer mat.
A magnificent symbolic and personified tree of life, thrones in the centre of a brick field. From its branches, all in convolutions, emerge an inextricable network of polychrome flowering and leafy stems. A bestiary of fantastic animals shelters there, batifole and hunt, an image of the antediluvian Garden of Eden. Four ivory and bluish counter-borders frame the main brick, all five with garlands of multicoloured flowers. (Wear and tear and restoration as is)
