Dignitary head
Mayan culture, Guatemala
Final classic, 550-950 AD.
White stucco with a matt patina due to the passage of time with remains of polychrome brick red, turquoise blue and black.
H. Height 34 cm
Man's head with bulging eyes due to a ritual deformation of the skull towards the back. Curiously, the iris is underlined by black circles. Long aquiline nose with dilated nostrils surmounting a lippuous mouth revealing the dentition. The skull is covered with an imposing cap, a sort of band supporting ornamental pompoms fixed on the forehead. A plume of feathers incised and fixed in the band of the headdress. Visible acc., surface wear, small fillings.
