Tripod anthropomorphic vase
Guanacaste culture, Nicoya region, Nicaragua/Costa Rica border
Late Period VI, AD 1200-1400.
H. 25 cm - D. 12 cm (at the neck)
Hollow ceramic with brown-red and creamy-white slip, black ornamental paint.
Rare ovoid container with a narrowed and circular neck decorated on the sides of a squatting figure. The arms attached to the sides are underlined in slight relief and are prolonged by powerful hands resting on the thighs. Head in strong relief with painted facial features: large open almond-shaped eyes, eyebrows highlighted with black lines; on the sides, circular earrings. The sex of the character is marked in strong relief. The man's hollow shins each support two elongated rectangular openings in which are taken balls of earth serving as a bell. The entire surface is beautifully decorated with linear motifs taken from rectangular registers of geometric ornamental motifs. Surface wear and tear, visibly glued broken, splinters.
This type of container representing a figure is particularly rare. Most of the time it represents jaguars or other animals. This one belongs to the category of "Pataky polychrome" vases, a style that can be found at the border either on the Nicaragua or Costa Rica side.
