Egypt - CLOT-BEY (Antoine Clot, said). General overview of Egypt. A doctor in Marseille, Antoine Barthélémy Clot (1793-1868) embarked in 1825 for Egypt where he soon won the confidence of Pasha Mehemet-Ali. The latter entrusted him with the task of organising the entire Egyptian civil and military health system and awarded him the title of Bey for his admirable behaviour towards the victims of the great plague and cholera epidemics that struck Egypt in the 1830s. On the death of Méhémet-Ali, Clot-Bey returned to Marseille, bringing with him a precious collection of Egyptian antiquities, which he ceded to the State in 1852.
