Generally considered a brilliant interpreter of the work of his father, the great Pieter the Elder, Pieter II Brueghel develops here a completely original composition. In 1969, in his monograph on the artist, Georges Marlier cites only two examples, which he describes as follows: "While on the meadow, peasants are sitting or kneeling in front of the pot on the ground ... Near a river and a row of farms aligned diagonally to the left, the huts stand out against the dense foliage of a wood. Other characters wander or stand in this ravishing site, so wonderfully forested and one of the most beautiful inventions of the painter, The execution of the foliage, which is sometimes reminiscent of Joos de Momper, is particularly successful".
The two examples cited by Marlier are:
- One, kept at the Narodni Galeri in Prague, signed panel, 44 x 58.5 cm (see Kl. Ertz,
Pieter Brueghel der Jungere, Lingen, 2000, no. 1122, reproduced.
- The other, at the time in a London gallery, signed panel, (probably Kl. Ertz, Op. cited above, no. 1120).
-
In his 2000 publication, Klaus Ertz cites two new versions:
- One that appeared at Sotheby's New York, on the 15th
