An extremely rare wooden Havdallah candle holder
Germany, 17th century
This highly elaborate polychrome candle holder ends with a sculpted hand whose fingers are bent to reveal the fingernails, referring to the custom of looking at them in the light of the flame during the Havdallah ceremony which marks the end of the Sabbat. The refined design and craftmanship of this object testify to a work of great artistic quality.
