A rare bronze Hannukah Lamp
Comtat venaissin (today France), 17th century
This triangular lamp is topped with a fleur-de-lis (a small piece of which is missing). This is one of the few known models from the 17th century. The Comtat Venaissin is an old state which was part of the papal states. It was founded in the Middle Ages in 1274 and completely dissolved in 1791. It is now part of the current department of Vaucluse in France. In the 14th century, the Comtadin Jews, also called the « Pope’s Jews », enjoyed better tolerance than the Jews of France. From the 16th century, they were forced to regroup and live in four Comtadine « quarries » : Avignon, Carpentras, Cavaillon and Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. « Quarry » was the name given to the street or the Jewish quarter where the entire Jewish population resided within each of these four towns of Comtat Venaissin.
Each quarry covered a small area whose access was closed at night. These four communities were called the « Arba Kehilot ». The largest of the four quarries was Carpentras, the city to which this model of Hannukah lamp is attributed.
