A monumental brass Hannukah Lamp
Butzbach, Germany, 1750
This magnificent lamp is of exceptional size for a wall-hanging model. It distinguishes itself by its very refined craftmanship and design and is likely the only German brass wall-hanging lamp of this magnitude and quality.
At the centre of the large oval medallion, Hanukkah prayers are inscribed, along with the owner’s name Eli Lippstadt, living in Weisel in the year 1750. The city of Weisel is most probably referring to Hoch Weisel or Nieder Weisel, both being nowadays part of the city of Butzbach (next to Frankfurt), where Jewish presence is documented since the Middle Ages. According to genealogical research, Eli Lippstadt was born around 1690 and died around 1752.
