ORFILA M. - P. HELP TO GIVE TO PEOPLE POISONED OR ASPHYXIATED. Followed by means to recognize adulterated poisons and wines, and to distinguish between real death and apparent death. PARIS, THE AUTHOR, CROCHARD & DESOER, 1818. A volume, in-12 (163 x 95 mm), of XXXVI and 238 pp., half-bound at the time in basane. Spine very ornate and gilt, marbled edges. First edition.
Orfila was a pioneer of toxicology (cf. Garrison-Morton, 2072) and his work was often republished and translated. In this treatise he explains the types of poisoning and indicates the remedies and counterpoisons. Many chapters concern food, mushrooms. He gives clues to recognize the bad, the treatments. Pages 199 to 216 are devoted to wine: falsifications, colourings, alterations, etc.
