MONTAIGNE Michel de. THE TESTS. New edition enriched and enlarged in the margins with the names of the authors quoted there, with the versions of the Greek, Latin & Italian passages. In PARIS, by Christophle JOURNEL, 1659. Three volumes, in-12, of (33) ff. 556 pp., (12) ff. - (1) ff., 827 pp., (1) p., (15) ff., - (1) ff., 610 pp., (17) ff., full ancient bindings in Havana calf. Spine with 5 partitions, floral and gilt spine with green morocco titlepapers, red gilt edges. Small missing at the foot of the spine of the first volume, a tear on the first spine of volume II, a small brown spot on the first title, angular missing on the second title, the title leaves seem to have been cut. Volumes a little short of head. Pretty engraved repeated title, with the portrait of Montaigne accompanied by his motto "Que sais-je? drawn and engraved by Nicolas de Larmessin. There is a table of chapters and a table of contents for each volume; the first volume begins with the author's warning, the dedicatory epistle of Marie de Gournay addressed to Cardinal de Richelieu and a preface to the same, followed by a biographical note. It is the first edition in three volumes. Rare.
