This work was to put an end to the double scandal caused by the affair of the Hospitalières du faubourg Saint-Michel in Paris. Opposed to the Constitution Unigenitus, they were subjected to the deaf hostility of the Archbishop of Paris who refused them legitimate elections... Weary of war, they brought the matter before the Archbishop of Lyon, Primate of France, who granted them a favourable judgment. This sentence was followed by a fierce controversy, with the Archbishop of Lyon accused of promoting and perpetuating Jansenism.
