Panel of Aubusson tapestry. France. Late 17th early 18th century Wool and silk.
This tapestry depicts a richly dressed noble lady conversing with what appears to be a doctor (archiatrix) carrying a vial of medicine, in front of an areopagus of counsellors conferring. The assembly includes two helmeted and armed soldiers, a turbaned oriental and four "senators" in togas. All takes place in the shelter of a powerful wall, in the courtyard of a fortress, in the shade of drapes. Border with garlands of flowers and fruits, composed of compositions, cups and horns of plenty.
