Tapestry panel from the workshops of the March. (France ) end of 16 th beginning of 17 th In wool and silk "Assuerus and Aman" from Esther's story. Aman wants to get Assuerus to sign an order to exterminate the Jews... This tapestry shows, without a doubt, a biblical scene, where we see a venerable sovereign with a flowery beard, in armour, toga and collar, wearing a royal tiara and having a sceptre in his hand, sitting on his magnificent throne, all draped in blue dyes, receiving a missive from another royal figure, of the same age, also holding a scepter and being dressed in a heavy and long "Brandenburg" coat, collar and headgear. A counsellor in a "Phrygian" cap accompanies the second, while the first is guarded by a heavily armed soldier and is "assisted" by a dwarf, who plays the role of the madman. A balustrade thickens the throne room of the other rooms of the castle, where we see a copyist writing a book and another conversing with a messenger. An archaic border with floral compositions and female characters shimmering. Height: 230; Width: 260cm Missing bottom edge. Maintenance restorations
