Beautiful panel of tapestry from Oudenaarde (Flanders), from the end of the XV°- beginning of the XVI° century.

A tapestry of the same series with a similar border is reproduced in J. Boccara's work "Souls of Wool and Silk" This one is called "Cabbage leaf with Bull" we see an Auroch and a Phoenix. Oudenaarde owes its fame to the "verdures", and this reputation has remained attached to this town, even if something else was also produced there. These Oudenaarde green tapestries were already exported to Italy in 1538. The "verdures", whose backgrounds were filled with large-leaved plants - probably acanthus leaves and not cabbage leaves - and populated by animals and birds of all kinds, were generally used in turn, depending on the availability of looms and fluctuating prices, in the centres of Enghien, Gramont and Oudenaarde, which were very close to each other.
