Rare Bruges Tapestry in wool and silk from the end of the 16th century, belonging to a series of hangings of at least 6 panels on the subject of the story of Julius Caesar.
Here we present the panel which has the trophy bearers in its register, reproducing an identical overturned reproduction of the sixth of the paintings on canvas of Caesar's Triumph by Andrea Mantegna (c. 1482-1492), kept at Hampton Court Palace. The loan is indirect, most probably made through the use of Andrea Andreani's xylographs published in 1598-1599. The rich border, consisting of vases, flowers, and numerous fruits such as grapes and pomegranates, is reported. A panel seems to be mentioned in the inventory of the French crown under Louis XIV in 1673, probably the one we present here.
On our panel the scene of the bearers of precious vases and trophies of arms takes place, as on the other known pieces, in front of a circular building. Our panel is particularly interesting because it is one of six paintings on canvas, of the triumph of Caesar, kept at Hampton Court Palace, by Andrea Mantegna (c. 1482-1492). Our panel is identical to the right third of one of the panels of the Toms collection reproduced in double pages (70/71) in Giselle Eberhard Cotton's book "La Collection Toms; Tapisseries du XVI° au XIX° siècle" (Lausanne, 2010).
