The crossing of the Red Sea (or the Sea of Reeds) is part of the biblical account of the Exodus (chapter 14, the escape of the Israelites, led by Moses, of the Egyptians in the book of Exodus. Moses stretches out his staff and the Red Sea is separated by God. The Israelites march on dry land and cross the sea, followed by the Egyptian army. Once the Israelites crossed safely Moses lifted up his arms again, the farm from the sea, and the Egyptians drowned.
A painting depicting The Passage of the Red Sea, by Nicolas Poussin is exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria (154x210cm). This painting was commissioned by Amedeo dal Pozzo (1579-1644). Dal Pozzo wanted a series of works illustrating the events of Moses' life for his palace in Turin. POUSSIN, recognized by the study of classical antiquities, takes this subject from the book of Exodus of the Old Testament and shows the moment after the closing of the Red Sea on the Egyptian army, pursuing the fleeing Israelites.
