"King David dancing before the Ark of the Covenant."
Tapestry panel from Oudenaarde, early 16th century, in wool and silk. Rich and beautiful border of plants, flowers (lilies) and colourful fruits (pomegranates).
2nd book of Samuel, Chapter 6, Verse 14: The King "David danced with all his might before the ark of the Lord his God". Indeed, it is recorded that King David refused to carry the Ark of the Covenant and decided to dance to the sound of the harp and tambourine before the Ark as it entered Jerusalem. Here we see King David dancing with all his might before the canopy under which the ark is supposed to be, for the ark was placed under a canopy while awaiting the construction of the first temple in Jerusalem, which was built by his son King Solomon.
