Hi?u D?, whose real name was Nguy?n Tánh D?, was born on August 1, 1935 in Phan Thi?t. He settled in Saigon at the age of 15, where he first attended the Hu?nh Khuong Ninh school, then the Lasan Tabert school before entering the Gia dình College of Fine Arts from which he graduated in 1960. He then studied under the direction of Lê Van Dê (1906-196) and alongside students such as Nguy?n Van Minh (1929-2006). From 1962, he taught at the D?ng Khánh School in Hue. A patriot, he published cartoons in the press, embarked on a military career and served as a Lieutenant in the Republican Army of Vietnam. It was then that he was taken as a political prisoner and sent to a reeducation camp where he confirmed that he was the author of a cartoon depicting three soldiers on a swing that caused great controversy. Upon his release in 1989, he moved to the United States, to Hollan, Michigan, where he died on 16 April 2009. In addition to his cartoon mentioned above, he is known for a series of lacquer paintings on the theme of heroes. He collaborated with many artists and writers such as Vuong Dình Thu . 2. This work marks by the fineness of its details, by the richness of its chromatic palette, by the combination of the three techniques (lacquer, mother-of-pearl application and eggshell application) and by its composition.
