Henri Fantin-Latour (1836 - 1904) is a French painter trained by his father, a portrait painter, from whom he acquired a great talent for this genre. He continued his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Familiar with the Louvre, he copied the Great Masters and became passionate about Venetian painting and its treatment of light, admiring Titian and Veronese in particular. He became friends with Édouard Manet, Berthe Morisot and James Wihstler, who took him to England. It was around 1861, during his stay in England, that Fantin-Latour began seriously to paint still lifes in which flowers were omnipresent. His popularity grows with English collectors. He is considered the worthy successor of Chardin's still lifes and the Courbet realists. In his first still lifes, he shows a spontaneity, simplicity and realism that our painting is a very beautiful representation of. Gradually, our artist will transform his way of painting by impasto and by more melted contour
