Horizontal frieze element from a house of initiation. This small lintel is carved symmetrically extending outwards from a central focal point, in this case a human head. The ends are carved with long bird feathers that overlap two circles attached to the central face. This element was attached to a larger frieze by a tenon. Wood (Alstonia scholaris), pigments and turbo cover. Bismarck Archipelago, New Ireland. Late 19th / Early 20th century. Expert : Laurent DODIER, Le Val St Père.
