He graduated from the Gia-Ðinh School of Applied Art in 1935 and completed his artistic training at the Schools of Fine and Decorative Arts in Paris (1943-1949). Nguyen Sao is one of the last Vietnamese painters to have received artistic training during the colonial period, and back in his country, one of the first to have taught at the Vietnamese Art Schools in Hanoi and then in Saigon (1952-1964), bringing his experience of Western art.
