Knight Philippe Samyn, Doctor of Applied Sciences, civil engineer, architect and urban planner, was born in Ghent on 1 September 1948.
He has been a member of the Belgian Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts since 1992 and Commander of the Order of Leopold. He was knighted by HRH King Albert II on 13 July 2012.
His work is based on permanent questioning, largely fuelled by numerous missions abroad, lateral thinking and his scientific work.
In particular, his discovery in 1997 of volume and displacement indicators has since undergone continuous scientific development, leading to a general and open theory on the design and pre-dimensioning of structures.
With his team of architects and engineers, his architectural production is developing in many sectors, in Europe and beyond: an opera house or a petrol station, a hospital or a bridge, a research centre or an urban plan.
