He graduated from the Milan Polytechnic in 1964, and during his university studies he worked for Franco Albini. He collaborated with Richard Rogers from 1970 (Piano and Rogers), and with Peter Rice with whom he created the Atelier Piano & Rice in 1977. In 1981, he founded "Renzo Piano Building Workshop", an office with a staff of about 150 people with offices in Paris, Genoa and New York. RPBW has designed buildings all over the world : "The Menil Collection in Houston, the Kansai International Airport Terminal in Osaka, the Jean Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center in New Caledonia, the Postdamer Platz in Berlin, the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, the extension of the Morgan Library in New York, the Maison Hermès in Tokyo, the headquarters of the New York Times, the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, the Modern Wing of the Art Institute in Chicago, the rehabilitation of the Ronchamp site,,,,, The London Bridge Tower (The Shard) in London, the expansion of the Los Angeles County Museum in Fort Worth and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, the redevelopment and expansion of the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, the new Withney Museum of American Art, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens, Greece, the Centro Botín in Santander, Spain, the New Paris Courthouse and the new campus of Columbia University in Manhattanville. He has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Royal Gold Medal in 1989, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1994, the Praemium Imperiale in 1995, the Pritzker Award, the highest arch
