Dong Qi Chang (1555?1636) was a painter, calligrapher, and art critic of the late Ming dynasty period. He had, as a critic, an enormous influence on a particular idea of literary painting in China but also in Japan, by radically contrasting a certain "Northern School" to a certain "Southern School". His conceptions were challenged only at the end of the twentieth century, when a systematic study of the entire history of literary painting could be made in relation to the works.
