War Booties, Arch of Titus, c. 1855 Tommaso Cuccioni (1790-1864) Albumen print, 31,2x22,5 cm, stamp on mount “Construction of the Collosseum was funded by the opulent spoils taken from the Jewish Temple after the First Jewish-Roman War in 70 CE led to the Siege of Jerusalem. According to a marble block riddled with holes from the inlaid bronze letters of a previous inscription, which can be reconstructed as having read: IMP CAES VESPASIANUS AUG AMPHITHEATRUM NOVUM EX MANUBIIS... FIERI IUSSIT, the emperor Vespasian ordered this new amphitheatre to be erected from his general's share of the booty.” (Wikipedia)
