Victor Hugo had prepared ink drawings to illustrate the Toilers of the Sea, but the publisher prefered a different illustration. Nevertheless Victor Hugo offered the original drawings to the BNF and had them replicated for his personal archive and library before the gift. Provenance : Paul Meurice
