Bartolomeo Alberto (in Mauro religion) Cappellari, born in Belluno, a city in the north of the Republic of Venice, on 18 September 1765 and died in Rome on 1 June 1846, was a monk priest and Camaldolese abbot elected Pope under the name of Gregory XVI (in Latin Gregorius XVI, in Italian Gregorio XVI), successor of Pius VIII. Elected Pope on February 2, 1831, he was ordained Bishop of Rome and enthroned on the 6th of the same month. He defended the Papal States against the attacks of revolutionary movements, and was at the origin of a revival of missionary commitment overseas.
