It was erected by order of Napoleon from 1806 to 1810 to commemorate the battle of Austerlitz. In 1871, it was destroyed during the Paris Commune before being rebuilt as we know it today. Over the years, it was given the names of Column of Austerlitz, then Column of Victory before becoming a column of the Grande Armée. It is commonly known as the Vendôme column. The medals, for marriage and baptism as well as those for the coronation, were issued in different modules and in different metals: gold, silver and even platinum. The larger ones were given to the great dignitaries who attended the ceremony and the smaller ones were thrown to the people. Marie-Louise, the eldest daughter of Emperor François I, was married to Napoleon against his desire to break up with Josephine. For the celebrations of 11 March 1810 in Vienna, Alexandre Berthier, a long-time companion and close associate of Napoleon, was sent to represent the French emperor.
