Probable hair of Madame du Barry (1743-1793).
Oval gilt metal medallion with hanging ring, with a crimson velvet border padded and circled with a string of pearls, enclosing a rectangular plate probably made of ivory bearing a monogram "JD" in braided hair and decorated with fleurs-de-lys at the corners.
On the back is a handwritten label: "Hair of Madame la Comtesse Jeanne Dubarry, born in 1744 in Vaucouleur, Mistress of King Louis XV, who died guillotined on Place de la Concorde in Paris in 1793 - note the small silver fleurs-de-lys at the corners of the hair".
