17th century FRENCH school, Simon VOUET's workshop The Virgin in swaddling clothes Walnut panel, one plank, not parquet flooring 52 x 38 cm Frameless A revival of a famous Vouet painting by Pierre Daret (see J. Thuillier, Le catalogue de l'exposition Vouet, Paris, Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, 1990 - 1991, reproduced p. 94). The Virgin and Child was a very fashionable theme in the 17th century, particularly prized by Simon Vouet who multiplied small formats for private clients from the 1630's. Few paintings have reappeared and in most of these works, the participation of the workshop is important. Twelve engravings were made, seven of them during the artist's lifetime.
