Rectangular snuffbox in 18K gold (750‰) and enamel, chiselled on all sides with wavy or interlaced net frames, the spandrels flowered; decorated with six polychrome panels, painted in the manner of BOUCHER, with landscape and hamlet decoration; the lid, decorated with a scene, representing seated children and two swans attacking a dog; the reverse, of a young woman sitting near a bridge; the sides, decorated with a child with a dog, well or fountain (restoration). Hallmark of Master Goldsmith Jean DUCROLLAY, received in 1734 and hallmark of Master Goldsmith Paul ROBERT, received in 1747. Paris, (1759-1760) and (1760-1761). Hallmarks: On the bottom: Master goldsmith (Jean DUCROLLAY), charge, jurande (letter V). On the cover: Master goldsmith (Paul ROBERT), charge, jurande (letter V). On the throat: Master goldsmith (Jean DUCROLLAY), swearword (letter T); discharge, (a shell) and Gar. XIXth, an eagle's head. Remarks: Following the example of our snuffbox, another DUCROLLAY snuffbox, also inscribed with the hallmark of a second goldsmith, (TIRON), dated 1760 -1761 and 1762-1763, is part of the eleven boxes of DUCROLLAY in the collection of the Louvre museum; Serge GRANDJEAN, indicating in his book, Les Tabatières du musée du Louvre, p. 91: Ducrollay moved to Place Dauphine for the rest of his career, which apparently ended in 1761; probably, our snuff box was also started by DUCROLLAY and finished by a second goldsmith, (Paul ROBERT). Jean DUCROLLAY, (1734-1761... quoted until 1766), was one of the most talented and renowned goldsmiths, jewellers and jewelers of his time; after his apprenticeship with Jean DRAIS, he was received Master in 1734, and had his hallmark inscribed, (crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, J D and a heart); by his great production and the remarkable quality of his creati
