Ernst BARLACH Lot n° 542

The reading monks I (Teaching) Bronze with dark brown patina. (1921). C. 15 x 14 x 7.5 cm. An unnumbered cast from an edition of 20 in total. Inscribed with the artist's name on the left side. With foundry stamp “H. NOACK BERLIN” on the reverse. The model (1921) for the bronze cast is housed in the Ernst Barlach Lizenzverwaltung in Ratzeburg. According to Laur, the bronze was cast from 1930 to 1937 (9) and since 1940 (11). As none of the casts were numbered, it is impossible to tell whether the present work is a lifetime cast or not.
